Tea on My Jumper

The science behind the song
"Tea on My Jumper" started from a very specific image: spilling matcha, again, and being fine about it (the jumper's own label reads "100% Natural Overthinker," which is the whole song in three words). Matcha is rich in polyphenols, including the catechin EGCG, alongside L-theanine, an amino acid found almost exclusively in tea. Together, these compounds are associated with a state often described as calm, focused alertness, distinct from the jittery alertness of caffeine alone.
The song is also a deliberate piece of neurodivergent-affirming writing. The line about a brain that works differently was chosen carefully, to sit alongside the science without turning it into a metaphor for something that needs fixing. It's a brain doing what brains do.
Key terms
Polyphenols. A large family of naturally occurring plant compounds characterised by multiple phenol rings in their chemical structure. They are found widely in fruits, vegetables, tea, coffee, cocoa, and herbs, and are studied for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Polyphenols include several subgroups, among them flavonoids, catechins, and tannins.
Catechin. A type of flavonoid polyphenol found in high concentrations in tea, particularly green tea and matcha. Catechins are antioxidants, and the most studied among them is EGCG.
EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate). The most abundant and most researched catechin in green tea. It has been studied for antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and potential neuroprotective effects. Matcha contains particularly high levels because the whole leaf is consumed as a powder rather than steeped and discarded.
L-theanine. An amino acid found almost exclusively in the tea plant (Camellia sinensis). It crosses the blood-brain barrier and is associated with promoting alpha brain wave activity, a pattern linked to relaxed alertness. When consumed alongside caffeine, as it naturally occurs in tea, it may help smooth out the stimulant effect, producing a calmer form of focus.
